SKYE HAS FOUND HER FAMILY!

In the above picture you can see Skye with her loving foster mom.  Her and her boyfriend took care of Skye for months and prepared her for this moment.  Elizabeth is very bonded to Skye and loves her very much, and Skye feels the same way.  Luckily, the new parents work in the same area as Elizabeth and she will be able to see her from time to time!

In this picture, Skye's parents are filling out the adoption paperwork.  She is going to be so loved.  In the application they wrote, "She's exactly what we were looking for."

Thank you to everyone who supported Skye and shared her story!  She finally got her happy ending after a year and a half.  There are a lot of tears at PAWS Atlanta today.

Skye is Back in her Foster Home!

Skye was SO excited to see Elizabeth!  She was ready to get out of the shelter.  She went to the dog bakery while Elizabeth worked and promptly passed out.  How could you resist that sweet girl on the doggie bed?

Skye is available for meet and greets.  Please contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org or call (770)593-1155 to set up a meet and greet!

Good Morning, Skye!

Skye is sitting (not so) calmly for her morning biscuit.  She really wants someone to love, but she just keeps being overlooked!  She is not too happy about this boarding situation.  She loves the staff, but she is accustomed to the finer things in life.  She is excitable when you get her out of the cage but, give her some time, she will settle.  She just doesn't understand why she is here.

She gets very excited to go on walks and to run around the off-leash trail.

And, once you are out there, she never wants to leave your side.  She is content to lay beside you f you are sitting or strut next to you if you are strolling.  She is such an amazing dog.  She is so soft, like velvet, and sweet as a cinnamon roll.

Adopt this baby today! Laura lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org

Skye at the Shelter

It has been stressful for Skye to board at the shelter, but she is in a safe place with people who dearly love her.  The trainer that has worked with her from the time she came in until now has had the chance to work with her again, which Skye loves.  She has enjoyed seeing the staff members that love her and going out on the offleash trail with them.

We know she is not as comfortable in her home because she pulls on the leash and directs us towards the gate, but we know that, in her foster home, she does not pull like she does here.  They have worked very hard with her.  She whimpers when she first gets out of her kennel and puts on quite the show of exuberance.  She also jumps and bounces around in her kennel when new people come by.  The other day she managed to escape her outdoor run just to be beside me.  She did not want me to leave her alone.

That being said, she has settled with us on the trail.  She has calmed down when we take her out.  She has responded well to her training.  I know she will be excited to see her foster mom, but we are so hoping that her forever family will come out to meet her and fall in love.  It would be best for them to meet her a couple times and then she could go home to say goodbye before making the transition into a permanent home.  We would love to surprise Elizabeth and Jon!  But, more than that, this girl has come a long way, and she deserves to have a home of her very own.

Visit Skye at PAWS Atlanta for the Next Two Weeks!

Skye is staying in the clinic for awhile while her foster parents are out of town.  Now would be a great time to come and meet her to see if she is a good match for your family!  Skye does great with other pups, and she gets really attached to the people who care for her--women in particular.

While Skye waits for her forever family, we will be enjoying quality time on the offleash area.  If you or anyone you know is interested in meeting Skye call Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org.  Or, if it is in the next two weeks, just come out to the shelter!

Skye Update!

Skye has been doing great in foster care, and she has really bonded strongly to Elizabeth.  We have learned a lot about her personality that we did not know at the shelter.  And we have learned that there are even more reasons than we thought to adopt her!
  • Skye is fairly easy to bathe.  She is patient and does not put up a fight.
  • She LOVES riding in the car, as she knows that when she gets in the car with Elizabeth she is usually going somewhere fun.
  • She cannot get enough tennic ball time.  She really enjoys retrieving them, and she is also good about taking turns with her foster brother, Parker.
  • She is a huge snugglebug and wants nothing more than to be near her person.
  • She really enjoys going on walks in the morning and the second she sees a leash she is waiting by the door, ready to go.  She does check in with Elizabeth often on walks and has learned not to pull nearly as much on the leash.
  • She has met a lot of dogs and seems to really enjoy being in their company.

We have also learned that Skye is afraid of thunderstorms.  She does not hurt anything or make a lot of noise.  She just curls up in a tight ball and shivers or hides in a dark corner.  She is still timid with a lot of men, including Jon who is helping foster her, but she does like some men right off.  It is unclear what she sees in some people that she does not see in others.  She is not aggressive with them but will try to get away or sometimes bark to let you know that she is nervous.

Skye went on her first hike a few weeks ago and was introduced to water.  She slowly gained her bravery and was willing to bounce around in the shallow water, chasing sticks.  This little girl has learned so much with Elizabeth and Jon, but it is time for her to find a permanent home.  Please share her blog with your friends and family and ask them to do the same.  Someone will be very lucky to be loved by this little girl!

Belly Rubs and Bakery Samples

A volunteer and I went to visit Skye at Taj Ma Hound yesterday, and she was so excited to see us and show off her new life.  She kept rolling over for belly rubs.  She looked so happy and so healthy.  Her coat was shiney and soft like velvet.

Skye is available for ADOPTION!  Please let your friends and family know about her.

Skye is at Taj Ma Hound!

If you are in Oakhurst today, you should stop by the dog bakery to meet Skye!  She is hanging out, enjoying the delicious smells and company.

When she is home she is bonding and even napping with Jon.  The training that Jon and Elizabeth are doing is really going a long way.

Please share Skye's story with your friends and family!  Contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org for more information.

The Exciting Month of May

Skye has come so far in her foster home in such a short period of time.  Elizabeth and Jon have been absolutely amazing.  They have worked very hard to help her get the essentials she will need to go into a loving home, including housebreaking.  She is still working on it, but we are seeing progress!  A wonderful trainer named JD gave us lots of good advice and how to train her in the home.  One of the things Elizabeth and Jon are doing is feeding Skye in different parts of the house and dropping treats throughout the house so that Skye does not want to go to the bathroom inside.  They are taking her out often and praising her when she does go outside.  Many people are under the mistaken impression that adult dogs cannot be trained, but that is not true.  They love to learn and find security in routine.

But life cannot be all work and no play!  She spends a lot of time getting spoiled--licking the last bit of peanut butter out of the jar, playing with other pups at the park, and chewing on sticks.  She is very attached to Elizabeth and does not want to leave her side for anything.

Skye LOVES playing with dogs her size and smaller, but she will play with larger dogs if they are the ones available.  She lives with a real big fella.

Make sure to look out for Skye in Atlanta Intown Newspaper this month!  She is their featured pet, and she couldn't be more beautiful.  You can grab a free newspaper at many Atlanta restaurants and bookstores.  I always get mine at the pizza place in East Atlanta!

Skye loves her foster family, but she really needs a permanent home.  Please share this blog with your friends and family.  Skye is a sweet, beautiful pup, with a coat of velvet.  Someone will be very lucky to be loved by her.  lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org

Dog Days

Skye is out enjoying her front yard with her foster mom, who she has really bonded with.  She is starting to go with her to work from time to time so, if you stop by the bakery, you might get the chance to meet her in person OR you could just contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org and we can set up an appointment.

She still seems to bond more with women than men, but Jon is a wonderful, dedicated guy and so he is taking the extra time to make Skye more comfortable.  He is handfeeding her in hopes that it will bring them closer together.  We are also discussing what other types of high-value rewards he (and only he) can give her, what types of training (like "touch") might improve their bond, and that it is important to let Skye approach him and not to rush things.  When working with a dog that can be shy, it is important to remember not to reach over their head, stare them in the eyes, or do other things that dogs consider to be confrontational.

All in all, Skye is a wonderful dog and her foster family loves her.  She really seems to enjoy the company of other dogs and would do great in a home with or without another canine.  Remember, setting up a meeting with her does not mean you are commiting to an adoption.  You are just gathering information.  If you would like to meet Skye let us know when would be a good time for you to come out to the shelter, and we will set up a time that works for everyone.  Contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org.

Skye is Taj Ma Hounds Featured Pet!

Taj Ma-Hound is a wonderful dog bakery in Oakhurst.  I love bringing my own dogs there to pick up a boneyard bag, a pup b r, or to spend time with all the other dogs at the Thursday night ice cream socials.  Skye's foster mom actually works there!

Just to give you an idea of all the cute stuff you can get there, these are some Halloween treats they made in the fall!

So, now Skye is quite famous.  If you would like to adopt a star please contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org

Starting a New Life in Foster Care

Skye was pulled from a local animal control a year ago.  We just knew her sweet demeanor, beautiful blue eyes, and coat like velvet would get her a home quickly.  We were wrong.  Skye has been at the shelter for a year!  We could not stand to watch her grow increasingly stressed out.  We had to find her a foster family.

One day a wonderful woman e-mailed and offered to help foster pets for PAWS.  She sounded perfect for Skye.  She met Skye multiple times and then brought out her boyfriend.  Everyone was on board with helping her out, including their dog Parker.

She is going on day 5 of being in her foster home, and she is doing great!  Elizabeth already says she is a different dog than the one she met at the shelter.  She is a total cuddle hog, and she loves to sit right next to people on the couch, lavished in their attention.  She is already quite bonded with Elizabeth, and she sticks with her with the kind of loyalty only dogs offer.  Skye has always been a little nervous with men so she is taking a little extra time to warm up to Jon.  She is never mean, but she will shy away from people if she is nervous.  Jon is making sure that he is the one that feeds her and with a little time and a whole lotta love we know she will be just as smitten with him soon.

They are now starting to work on skills that will help her find a new home.  Like waiting for them to walk out the door before she does, slowing down her overzealous eating, and putting the finishing touches on her housebreaking.  Skye has found the perfect place to rest and wait for her permanent home.  Any family would be lucky to have her.  She is sweet.  She is beautiful.  She has a zest for life that is contagious.  If you are interested please contact Laura at lmckelvey@pawsatlanta.org.  If you cannot take on another dog right now, please consider sharing her story with your friends, coworkers, and family.
